Some interesting IT workforce trends

I came across two interesting pieces of news this morning: HP is cutting back on telecommuting. By August, most of HP’s IT employees will be required to work from one of HP’s office instead of from home, even though HP pioneered the telecommuting trend starting in the late sixties. Apparently they have found that significant efficiencies are gained by allowing the IT employees to collaborate in person and learn from each other....

Apple Bootcamp

Earlier this week, Apple unexpectedly released their Bootcamp software, which allows owners of Intel based Macs to dual-boot into Windows XP. Bootcamp itself appears to mainly consist of the required Windows XP drivers, whereas a firmware update is actually responsible for enabling the dual boot feature. For the most part, this sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I don’t own a Mac, but I am pretty certain that my next computer (Notebook or Desktop) will be a Mac, and this feature adds extra confidence to first time Mac users that they will be able to continue to run their Windows applications....

Who needs P2P when we have Google?

Here’s a cool way of using Google to find MP3s. Essentially, it’s a simple matter of using a query like the following: (replace Keyword with the name of an artist, song, etc.) There are a whole bunch of similar (and other) Google tricks on this website. Mac Envy

I so need to get me one of these babies: MacBook Pro. The specs are quite awesome: Too bad I don’t have $2500 to spare right now… Let’s hope for a big tax refund this year. Still, I’m somewhat surprised that Apple gave up on the PowerBook brand that they spent a lot of time on developing. But then again I have no doubt that the new MacBook brand will catch on very quickly…...

Linux Anniversary (sort of)

I just realized that it’s been a little over a year since I pretty much permanently switched from Windows to Linux! I had been using Linux on and off over the past 10 years or so, but it wasn’t until a year ago that I seriously ditched Windows in favor of Linux. On December 30, 2004 I blogged about my Gentoo installation, which I had completed the week before. I kept Windows as a dual boot option, but these days I pretty much never boot Windows any more....
